Innovations to reduce food waste

X5 is constantly looking for new solutions to minimise waste from its own operations. In June, Pyaterochka’s distribution centre in Bogorodsk piloted an rNature composter, which recycles damaged products into composting material. This solution significantly reduces the amount of waste sent to landfill, which in turn reduces landfill greenhouse gas generation. Notably, the composter takes up little space and has low energy consumption, which additionally helps to reduce X5’s carbon footprint.

As part of the composting process, bruised or damaged fruit and vegetables are loaded into the composter as they accumulate and are then converted into compost for use as fertiliser. Over the two weeks of the pilot project, the composter saved 1.4 tonnes of organic material from being sent to landfill and produced 139 kg of compost, which can be used to fertilise land.
